As a Group – and as people – we believe in the power of inclusion to restore the social connections that we often see weakening nowadays. Above all, we have chosen to promote sport as a way to bring people together and share values.
Our most recent initiative – the CheBanca! Academy of Woodworking (“L’accademia del Legno”) – set up in co-operation with Fondazione Cometa, addresses the issue of social inclusion in the workplace for young people from difficult social, economic and personal backgrounds, as indeed does the INSIEME/TOGETHER project, now in its second year, is our latest initiative to promote sport for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and at risk of exclusion, by targeting pupils at primary and secondary schools in several outer-Milan districts. In 2019 we held the third edition of the Mediobanca Group Sport Camp, a multi-sport camp which was run at the “Cesare Beccaria” young offenders’ institution in Milan, to offer the detainees a week of sport, competition in an atmosphere of respect for rules and fair play.
In 2019, we held the second edition of “The Prisoners Ask Why” initiative, we invited some major Italian writers to come with us to various prisons to offer the inmates an opportunity to ask them some of their most profound questions. We also confirmed our support for Don Gnocchi foundation, directing it in particular to the sporting and social/educational activities provided by the Centro Vismara towards the south of Milanin line with the direction taken by the Group in supporting the disadvantaged areas of the region in which it is based. We are also continuing with our commitment to VIDAS to complete the construction of the Casa Sollievo Bimbi, a respite facility in which children with illnesses will receive competent, loving care together with their families.
In 2016, we teamed up with the Italian Paralympic Committee (CIP) for the #Oltre (“Beyond”) project, aimed at spreading the values of Paralympic sport as a way to encourage social integration, and to celebrate a culture of achievement and fair play.
We are committed to a number of other initiatives for the social inclusion of children and young people. In the UK, through Cairn Capital, we support the Coram Foundation, which directly supports vulnerable children and their families, and STOP the Traffik, which campaigns against human trafficking. Through Compagnie Monégasque de Banque, we also support the Monaco Hotel Management School, which trains talented young people for the luxury tourism and hospitality industry, a key sector of Monaco’s economy.
As RAM Active Investments we operate via RAM Active Philanthropy Foundation which is active with: the UNHCR, the leading world organization working at the front line to save human lives and protect the rights of millions of refugees; Fondation Miracles, which, via the MIRACLES CENTRE in Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina), provides prostethic care for the highest possible number of persons disabled by or victims of anti-personnel mines; and Children of the Dawn, which helps orphans and children of HIV-positive parents in various aparts of southern Africa.
We are a partner of the Valore D Association, which promotes women leaders in business and in 2018 signed their Manifesto for women in the workplace, reiterating our commitment to making gender diversity a value.In 2019 we also signed the “Women in Banking: Promoting Gender Diversity” charter developed by ABI, confirming our support for equal opportunities.
CheBanca! Academy of Woodworking Launched - Mediobanca Group working with Fondazione Cometa to provide employment opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds
The project aims to offer employment opportunities to young people with social, economic and personal difficulties, with the objective of becoming a sustainable and self-standing business within the next three years, providing services and products of excellence in the field of furniture and interior design.
In the next three years, Contrada degli Artigiani, via the CheBanca! Academy of Woodworking, will invest in the professional development of six young people who are either unemployed or who come from a difficult personal situation. At the end of their training, some of the students will be taken on by the Academy, while the others will be able to approach the workplace with confidence having acquired new skills. The Academy will also offer 24 apprenticeships aimed at helping other young people with similarly challenging backgrounds to find their way in the workplace.
By the end of their time with the Academy, all graduates will have acquired the skills necessary to embark on a career in the woodworking profession, one of the flagship “made in Italy” industries.
This project further strengthens the Mediobanca Group’s commitment to social inclusion initiatives, this time in the employment area, for young people from less fortunate backgrounds, in particular through CheBanca! which has always been closely involved with the needs of the households and areas in which it operates, providing concrete responses to the financial planning requirements of its customers which often are focused on realizing the objectives of the younger members of the households.
Manifesto for women in the workplace
The Manifesto is being promoted by Valore D, an association of companies which seeks to promote diversity, talent and female leadership for the growth of businesses and the Italian nation in general.
In particular the Group is committed to:
- Instituting careful monitoring of the number of women working for the company, with the objective of improving gender disparity indicators
- Increasing female representation in all areas of the business, supporting their development including through appropriate training programmes and instruments which can facilitate the need to balance work and home commitments.
The Prisoners Ask Why
Many whys were asked by the inmates involved in the first edition held in 2018.
Diverse and often very profound questions were asked, which deserved considered and empathetic responses. Around these responses, a pathway was developed to allow the inmates to engage in an original dialogue on issues affecting them personally, while at the same time giving the authors themselves an important emotional experience.
The success of this first version was what motivated the decision to run this second edition of the project, increasing the number of both inmates and writers involved.
This year volunteers from Mediobanca will be involved as well, confirming the Group’s commitment to supporting social inclusion.
The questions received through The prisoners ask why will be addressed to the authors in a calendar of meetings to be held between March and September at five of the institutions participating in the programme.
The first will take place on 19 March 2019 at the “Torre del Gallo” in Pavia, with the participation of Isabella Bossi Fedrigotti. This will be followed by other appointments in other institutions with Marco Balzano, Gianni Biondillo, Andrea Kerbaker, Giuseppe Lupo, Umberto Galimberti and Pier Luigi Vercesi who will meet with prisoners in Milan (San Vittore and Beccaria), Pavia again, Bollate and Vigevano.
Around 200 inmates will be involved in the project.
“Promoting social inclusion is an issue to which we have decided to commit ourselves concretely, starting with the area which is closest to us geographically: the city of Milan and the region of Lombardy”, said Francesco Saverio Vinci, General Manager of Mediobanca. “Human capital has always been the heart of both our professional and social activities, and in the latter we have been focusing increased attention of people in disadvantaged situations of various kinds. The idea is to help the people who are held in the prisons participating in the initiative to maintain a dialogue with the outside world through the words and faces of the authors and volunteers they will be meeting”.

Don Gnocchi Foundation
In Italy, the phenomenon of young people leaving school early is on the increase, in particular in the period between the end of middle school and the first years of senior school. The phenomenon is most evident in the outskirts of the large cities, where the areas of the population most affected by unemployment, poverty, and, in the case of immigrant families, difficulties in integrating tend to be concentrated.
Mediobanca’s support for the Fondazione Don Gnocchi, in line with the direction taken by the Group in supporting the disadvantaged areas of the region in which it is based, forms part of our social inclusion projects.
Mediobanca has worked alongside the Fondazione Don Gnocchi for years now, and for the second-year running has decided to prioritize the socio-educational activities of the “Vismara-Don Gnocchi” Centre in Milan, situated towards the south of the city, in an area with social problems which results in a high percentage of young people leaving school early.
Mediobanca’s support will be focused in particular on the activities of the daytime respite centre for underage children with difficult family situation, who are identified by the schools and the local educational agencies and taken up by the foundation which comes alongside to help in their education and hopefully lead them to obtain their middle-school diploma.
The daytime respite centre has two main areas of activity: the afternoon educational centre, and the training/education laboratory. The activities proposed (workshops in creative writing, cookery, lawfulness, sports activities, manual activities, cinema project) give ample space to practical activities and creativity, stimulating learning and development through experience.
Mediobanca’s contribution will finance three children’s education for 2019.
Mediobanca Group INSIEME
Now in its second year, the project, organized in partnership with CUS Milano Rugby and sponsored by the City of Milan, promotes social inclusion through sport in a number of areas on the outskirts of the city. In 2017 the project launched in the Quarto Oggiaro neighbourhood, and this year will be extended to the Via Padova district as well, to be followed by the Baggio area in 2019, with the goal of reaching at least 1,500 boys and girls aged between 8 and 14.
All the activity is arranged and managed by CUS Milano Rugby through a team of instructors and qualified technical staff, and will involve the classes of schools in the areas trying their hands at rugby, volleyball and athletics, with afternoon classes running throughout the whole year.
The sporting activity will be assisted by the presence of a sport psychologist and doctor to certify that the children are able to take part in the sports. Participants will be given all materials needed to take part free of charge.
A year since the new rugby and volleyball pitches were opened at the Sant’Agnese parish oratory in the Quarto Oggiaro area of Milan, another milestone has been reached in the INSIEME project, with the inauguration of a new rugby pitch in Via Cambini in the Via Padova area. A large area of parkland has been completely redeveloped, and new facilities built. Already weekly training sessions are being held there for around 120 local young people, with high female participation levels (around 30% of those taking part are girls).

Sport and social inclusion: Mediobanca, municipality of Milano and CUS Milano come together again
Mediobanca group Sport Camp
The Mediobanca Group Sport Camp is a solidarity project implemented under the patronage of Milan City Council, to promote socialization and sporting values among the young offenders at the “Cesare Beccaria” institute in Milan.
This third year of the Sport Camp is further testimony to the Mediobanca Group’s commitment at all levels to support those most at risk of exclusion from society.
Set up in 2017 with the collaboration of Italian rugby star Diego Dominguez and his staff, this year around forty young people from the Institute aged between 16 and 21 took part in a variety of sports.
The Group’s commitment was supported by our employees, who worked with the Camp staff during the week. Also taking part were Federico Morlacchi (four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympics), representatives of Inter Milan’s Primavera team and its youth coaches, and members of the CUS Milano Rugby team.
To help translate the Camp’s objective into practice, various sessions were devoted to sharing sporting values and spirit: loyalty, discipline, solidarity, responsibility and teamwork.
Italian Paralympic Committee
On 12 May 2016, Mediobanca Group teamed up with the Italian Paralympic Committee (CIP) to help support and spread the values of Paralympic sport.
Mediobanca, Compass and CheBanca! have worked with the CIP at leading events such as the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games (7–18 September 2016), and will continue to do so at the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The partnership also covers the Italian Paralympic Awards, National Paralympic Day (2016, 2018 and 2020), and all national and international events promoted by the CIP and dedicated to the Paralympic ideal.
The Italian Paralympic Committee is a confederation of national Paralympic sports federations. It was established in March 2005 to coordinate and organise sporting events across the country and to promote Paralympic sports as a means to the social and cultural integration of people with disabilities. The CIP is the Paralympic counterpart of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).
Women in Banking: Promoting Gender Diversity
In November 2019 Mediobanca signed the “Women in Banking: Promoting Gender Diversity” charter, a tool developed and made available by the Italian Banking Association ABI to strengthen and support commitment in the area of equal opportunities.
The charter commits those who sign it to promote company policies based on the following equal opportunities principles:
- Consistently promote an inclusive working environment which is open to diversity values, including based on gender;
- Reinforce staff selection and development policies which are adequate promote equal opportunities in terms of gender throughout the company organization, helping qualified female candidates to emerge in areas where they are currently in the minority;
- Encouraging full, effective female representation in the most senior positions in particular, in a corporate environment geared at all levels towards equal opportunities in terms of role and equality of treatment;
- Commit to promoting gender equality outside the bank as well to the benefit of the local community;
- Implement suitable initiatives to guide and develop the bank’s own corporate policies in the area of equal opportunities – including through testimonies and campaigns to raise awareness of the reasons and benefits expected – under the responsibility of high-profile figures.
